Test Accommodation Implementation

To ensure correct implementation of AccessibleNU-approved test accommodations, Testing Services adheres to the following test accommodation guidelines. This is not a comprehensive list of ANU-approved test accommodations. Contact Testing Services if you have questions about how to implement a test accommodation not listed below.

Computer for Short Answer & Essay Questions

This accommodation only applies if there are short answer and essay questions on the exam. Testing Services maintains a computer lab in which we can block internet access if the exam does not allow any outside materials. Canvas exams meet the accommodation need.

Enlarged Font

When students are approved for a specific font accommodation, faculty are responsible for providing exam materials in the converted font format. Testing Services can prepare converted exam files for instructors when given at least 72 hours' notice prior to the student’s exam.

Exam File Conversion Resources

  • 色控传媒 has a license with SensusAccess for accessibility conversions.
  •

Reduced Distraction Environment (RDE)

Students with the RDE test accommodation can take their exams with other students who have ANU-approved test accommodations. While 色控传媒 cannot guarantee a distraction free environment, instructors should provide a room with less than 25 other students, limit noise and movement to the best of their ability, and ensure that students are not moved from one room to another throughout the duration of the exam.

Scribe/Typist for Exams

Many students utilize assistive technology for exams to meet their scribing/typing accommodation needs. Depending on the exam format and the expected outputs in the student’s response, a scribe/typist might be needed for the student’s exam.

In some cases, Testing Services can provide scribing support. However, we recommend the academic department provide a scribe/typist when the exam includes specific technical terms or jargon, advanced equations and symbology, drawing images or graphs, and/or specific software taught in the course. Contact Testing Services to determine the best plan for scribing/typing your student’s exams.

Short Breaks on Exams or Bathroom Breaks

Breaks are included in the extra time accommodation the student is approved for by ANU, unless specified otherwise in the accommodation letter. This means that the student’s exam time continues when they take a break.

Testing in a private room

Each student with test accommodations does not need a private room for their test unless clearly specified in the accommodation letter. Testing Services can proctor for all students with an approved private testing room accommodation within our proctoring hours.

Extra Time (1.25x, 1.5x, 1.75x, 2.0x)

Extended Time Accommodations in Canvas Exams

Instructors must set up students’ extra time accommodations in the Canvas quiz settings. There are 2 locations that the quiz timing must be adjusted: Quiz Moderation and Availability Window. Visit the for step-by-step instructions.

Take Home Exams

Extra time accommodations only apply to exams in which there is a constraint on the time allowed to complete the exam. If the student can work on the exam for any amount within a window of time the exam is open, the student’s extra time accommodation does not apply to this exam format. For example, if the student could work on the exam for any amount of time within a 2-day period, their extra time accommodation would not apply.

Extra Time Considerations

Students with extra time accommodations must be provided with the approved timing regardless of whether a longer base time is given to the class with the assumption that everyone will easily complete the exam. For example, if you expect a quiz to only take 20 minutes to complete but give the class 1 hour to take it, a student with 1.5x extra time would still receive 1.5 hours to complete the exam.
